Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab

Our lab is interested in experience-dependent plasticity, i.e. how neuronal responses are shaped through the animal’s interaction with the surrounding environment. We are particularly interested in the effect that memory/ expectations have on learning and sensing.

For an adult animal, an environmental stimulus is rarely completely novel. The animal has, as a result, an expectation regarding the behavioural outcome associated with this stimulus. We study the interaction between memory and sensation, by looking at how learned information about a given stimulus influences the way the animal responds to other familiar and novel stimuli.
We use the auditory system to address this question by recording neuronal responses to behaviourally relevant auditory stimuli at different levels within the auditory system. The lab uses a combination of behaviour and in vivo electrophysiology to, respectively, induce and detect these changes.

From a very different perspective but touching on related questions, we study the role of myelin in cognition using also behavioural and electrophysiological tools in genetically modified mice.
