Translational Molecular Imaging

Translational Molecular Imaging

Prof. Dr. med. Frauke Alves is the head of the interdisciplinary group "Translational Molecular Imaging" located at the UMG, Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology and the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, as well as at the Max-Planck-Institute of Experimental Medicine.

The focus of the AG Alves is the application of non-invasive and high-resolution imaging techniques in combination with molecular probes to better understand the development and progression of diseases and to evaluate and optimize diagnostic procedures and novel therapeutic concepts, especially in the field of cancer and lung diseases. These include, for example, image-guided surgical procedures or nanoparticle-based therapeutic strategies. For this purpose, disease-relevant mouse models such as for breast-, pancreatic- and lung tumors or for inflammatory and metabolic disorders are established and applied. Disease-related structural changes in the organism are visualized in vivo over time or in high-resolution ex vivo in tissue samples using various X-ray-based imaging techniques. In addition, optical imaging techniques are used for the visualization of biological processes in vivo or ex vivo or for the characterization of tumors with a special emphasis on personalized treatment strategies. A special focus of the AG Alves is the translation of preclinical results into clinical application. This is achieved through the interdisciplinary working environment and close cooperation with the clinical departments of the University Medical Center Göttingen as well as internationally through participation in various EU projects. Prof. Alves is the current President of the European Society for Molecular Imaging (ESMI, http://www.e-smi.eu/).
